Water is a great way to get stunning fall foliage photography. Look for wooded areas with lots of color and rivers and streams running through. Rivers and streams have areas that swirl, especially near waterfalls. Fallen leaves can get caught in these swirls and create colorful leaf swirls. Bring a tripod as you will want to use a longer shutterspeed. Make sure to take multiple exposures to get your water looking nice and to get your leaves with the right swirl.

Throughout the American West, there are many high ridges with rich red and yellow colors, especially from the plentiful amount of aspen trees. These areas, such as in the Uinta Mountains of Utah and areas of Wyoming, provide great opportunities to capture colorful foliage this fall season. Some might thing that you need cloudy days and flat lighting to get the best images of fall colors. However, looking for ridges with and mountainsides with openings to let the sunlight through can give you a high contrast look that make the leaves glow and have a shimmering appearance. Even in monochrome these leaves can look great as they can have a shimmering silver look. Be sure to plan ahead to find areas where there are plenty of aspens and other trees that change color so that you can get the right image.
